AELIUS
Caesar under Hadrian

Reigned: 136-138

LVCIVS AELIVS CAESAR, born about 104 into an old Etruscan family, at birth was given the name of his grandfather and father, Lucius Ceionius Commodus. He married Domitia Lucilla sometime before 130 and had at least three children, including Lucius Verus. He was intelligent, but given over to pleasure. He was a consul in 136 when he was adopted by Hadrian in a surprise move on August 10. He was given tribunicial power and a second consulship in 137 and sent to govern Pannonia with proconsular powers. He returned to Rome late in 137 because of ill health and died in his sleep on January 1, 138.
