CLODIUS ALBINUS
Western Usurper

Caesar 193-195 A.D.
Augustus: 195-197 A.D.

DECIMVS CLODIVS SEPTIMIVS ALBINVS was born about 145 in Hadrumetum, Africa, to wealthy parents. He entered military service and was Governor of Britain when Pertinax was assassinated in 193 and the Empire auctioned off to Didius Julianus. He joined the general revolt against Julianus by agreeing to become Caesar under Septimius Severus, the Governor of Pannonia. However, after eliminating his eastern rival, Pescennius Niger, Severus treacherously turned on Albinus in 195. Albinus moved into Gaul to confront him and on February 19, 197, Albinus died at the Battle of Lugdunum.
